Balfour Beatty Communities Recognized for Sustainable Efforts at Beacon Point Homes in Groton, Connecticut

Malvern, PA --- January 21, 2025 --- Balfour Beatty Communities, a trusted housing partner for the U.S. Navy, has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability with a $91,775 utility rebate from Groton Utilities. The award highlights the successful implementation of energy-efficient upgrades at Beacon Point Homes, a key housing site for military families.

The upgrades include the installation of heat pump water heaters, mini-split systems, and the removal of a 1,000-gallon underground oil tank. Notably, six homes were fully electrified, transitioning from oil heating to energy-efficient mini-splits that now provide both heating and air conditioning—previously unavailable to residents. These improvements are making a significant difference in the comfort and satisfaction of military families.

“We are proud to be recognized for our efforts to improve sustainability and enhance the quality of life for our service members and their families,” said Edward Lopes, VP of Navy Project Development. “These upgrades not only generate energy savings but also contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable environment for everyone in the community.”

In addition to the six occupied homes, two previously unoccupied units were completely renovated with mini-splits, electric vehicle chargers, new flooring, updated kitchens and bathrooms, and repaved walkways. These homes have become some of the most desirable units in the community, demonstrating the value of sustainable renovation.

“Navy Family Housing upgrades with innovative equipment such as whole home heat pumps - which add air conditioning; heat pump hot water heaters; and, electric vehicle charging are outstanding PPV initiatives,” said Capt. Kenneth M. Curtin Jr., Naval Submarine Base New London Commanding Officer. “These upgrades increase efficiency and reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels; but more importantly, they greatly improve the quality of life for the Sailors and families that live in Beacon Point Homes.”

Environmental Impact:
• Eliminated approximately 3,259 gallons of heating oil annually.
• Reduced 73,180 pounds of CO2 emissions each year.
• Replaced outdated oil boilers with energy-efficient heat pumps and mini-splits.

Groton Utilities, a non-profit, publicly owned utility serving the City of Groton, has been instrumental in this success. Their dedication to providing high-quality services at affordable rates has helped make these sustainability efforts possible, and the rebate funds will be reinvested into further improvements at Beacon Point Homes.

Working closely with the Department of Defense, as part of the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI), Balfour Beatty Communities has delivered more than 14,000 new homes and significantly renovated an additional 15,000 housing units. MHPI, enacted in 1996, leverages private-sector capital and expertise to address the military’s backlog of deferred maintenance by expanding and upgrading housing, ensuring predictable, stable long-term operating costs and performance. Balfour Beatty Communities will finance, develop, build, renovate, and operate these projects for at least 50 years.
